Developing quantum science and technology in Spain
QTEP is the quantum ecosystem created by CSIC to advance the field of quantum technologies, fostering training, research and innovation in a new generation of secure communication devices, computers and sensors based on quantum phenomena, such as entanglement or superposition.

QTEP is a collaborative effort among CSIC groups and partnering academic and industrial institutions, pushing the boundaries of quantum communication, quantum computing and quantum sensing, and advancing the tools and devices to fabricate new quantum technologies.

> 100 researchers

35 research labs

9 universities
QTEP’s research is strongly oriented towards applications of industrial and commercial interest. Companies may benefit from our growing portfolio of technologies, establishing partnerships and contracts, or participating in our high-tech startups.

Our effort to create a broad ecosystem includes the organization of outreach and training, industry oriented networking events, specialized workshops and seminars, and world leading international conferences.

Researchers from CSIC’s Quantum Techologies Platform, Daniel Barredo and Juan José García Ripoll, in collaboration with Enrique Rico Ortega (UPV/EHU, Ikerbasque, BasQ and CERN), organize a summer school on how programmable quantum devices (superconducting circuits, trapped ions, Rydberg-atom arrays, and ultracold atomic systems) open new avenues for addressing fundamental physics problems beyond the reach of…

The Quantum Technologies Platform (QTEP) at CSIC is pleased to announce the launch of QEC4QEA (Quantum Excellence Centre for Quantum-Enhanced Applications), a new European project funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) with nearly €4.9 million in support. The project officially started on 1 November 2025 and will run until 31 October 2029. Coordinated…

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has taken a major step toward space-enabled quantum-secure communications with the installation of a quantum optical ground station on the rooftop of the Institute of Physical and Information Technologies “Leonardo Torres Quevedo” (ITEFI-CSIC) in central Madrid. The facility—protected by a dome and featuring a 600 mm-aperture telescope—is designed to…

Building a reliable quantum computer remains one of the great scientific and technological challenges of our time. Among the most promising approaches is the use of Majorana-based qubits—special quantum states that, in theory, are naturally protected against errors. However, demonstrating that these exotic states can be reliably controlled and measured has been an enormous experimental…

From 23–25 March 2026, Palma de Mallorca will host the Women 4 Quantum (W4Q) Science Conference, an international meeting dedicated to advancing excellence and diversity in quantum science. The event is organized by Roberta Zambrini, a member of the QTEP community from the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC) — a joint institute…

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has launched a new research project that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with quantum simulation based on Rydberg atoms. The initiative strengthens CSIC’s strategic commitment to quantum technologies and is embedded within the activities of CSIC’s Quantum Technologies Platform, which coordinates and promotes research efforts across the institution in this…
